Learn about XML and RSS

What is XML?

With the gaining popularity of the Internet today, it has become more important to quickly retrieve information. As a result, new technologies have been researched and created to create a simpler system for all of us. XML, or eXtensible Markup Language, serves as a general framework for many types of applications, including RSS.

What is RSS?

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, allows data to be easily identified and directly delivered to all subscribers. Since all subscriptions are managed by each user, standard Internet problems, like spam, are eliminated. It also allows users to stay updated with the latest information without accessing websites repeatedly.

How do I use RSS feeds?

The first, and most important, thing you need is a news reader. There are currently numerous types of news readers available, some of which are used through your web browser and others which work as standalone programs. All allow you to display and subscribe to your favorite RSS feeds.

Once you have selected a news reader, you just need to select the content you would like to see. Most websites offer an orange Live Bookmark, XML or RSS button to help you quickly identify their available news feeds. For example, More Solutions includes an orange Live Bookmark icon on its home page.

If you click the special button, you can subscribe to the feed. Each news reader requires specific instructions, so it is important to consult your software directions. Some require dragging the icon, while others simply ask you to click the button. Some web browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox, include built-in RSS functionality.
